3 May 2012

Today was a theory day at school (i.e. no cooking and hence a considerably more relaxed atmosphere). We learnt about cheese, wine, food hygiene ... but the highlight for me was the brief talk about fire safety.  Pourquoi, you ask? Because the Irish man who gave the presentation (which was in fairness very informative) concluded it by advising the best way to treat a burn was to liberally apply butter to it. Yes readers, BUTTER. I mean, I know this is a French cookery school, but surely the answer to every dilemma cannot be butter?!

There is little I can say about the cheese lecture and sampling other than 'yum'. As for the wine, I urge you to check out the unintentially hilarious documentary by British wine writer Hugh Johnson. It was filed at a time when beige corduroy was the height of fashion ... I was half expecting Penelope Keith to wander into the frame. There is a scene where a couple is having a dilemma as to whether they should order a bottle of red or white wine (he has ordered fish and she, resplendant in a coral off-the-shoulder gown, has ordered steak). Hugh's answer? 'There is no issue in ordering 2 bottles of wine for 2 people'. Bravo, Hugh. There goes the designated driver.

Below is Episode 1. It goes wonderfully with a Beaujolais and a little washed rind Brie.
